Take your career to the next level and step into a new Management role in Kerry - Pitman Training Career Plan Q & A Series
If you are thinking of taking the next step towards a managerial career or wondering what management skills and training you might need, for starters it is about your attitude and willingness to do more than just fulfil your basic job description. It can take a little bit of time but with planning and gaining some good management skills along the way, you could be on your way to that promotion in no time. Read on for some valuable hints and tips.
Q What can you do to prepare in your current role?
A
To know if you are ready for management there are some key areas
of focus you will need to have demonstrated up to this point, such as:
- Understanding the company as a whole - if you are not privy to certain information already, then start researching and reading up the company’s goals and strategies, get access to the most recent annual report and research the current competitors to see exactly where the company stands. You really need to understand the internal workings of the company, if there is an area you don’t know much on then make it your business to learn about and show interest in working with these other areas and how all departments need to work together to contribute to overall success.
- Become an expert problem solver – if there are any issues that are causing inefficiency in your current role, then test some solutions and present them to your manager rather than reporting a problem and waiting for direction.
- Read management books – it is well worth reading up on different ways to approach many common problems in the workplace and changing your mindset. Good books can create a fresh perspective.
- Be professional – you will need to display leadership and professional behaviour and lead by example as though you would if you were in a management role already. Display a good work ethic, be the team member everyone can count on and the go to person.
- Take on projects – find ways to manage projects and people and show that you are ready for more responsibility.
Q What qualifications would you need?
A While
a management degree isn’t necessary, you will need training to help you address
any weaknesses in your skillset. We all have them so it’s more a matter of
identifying where the gap is and finding the right training programme for you.

Manager will be different to that of a Departmental Manager, HR or Marketing
Manager or even a Project Manager. However general roles and responsibilities could
include health and safety of the workforce, carrying out the mission and goals
